Dear Captains, Deckhands, and even Greenhorns,
It's almost time for you to head out. Boats have been inspected, possibly repainted and repaired, pots have been rigged, and appearences are wrapping up. You've met tons of people this summer, have shaken their hands, given hugs, signed pictures of yourselves. I'm sure this is still sinking in that you are television stars, that you are "famous" and that there are people all over the world that care about your safety and your well-being.
And that's the purpose of this letter really. While you get ready to go do your jobs, whether it be bait boy or skipper, thousands, no, millions of people are already praying for you. We are praying for a safe trip, a prosperous season, and minimal injuries. I would never presume to say "no" injuries, they are bound to happen.
For the Captains: Our wish is for you leave reality behind. Leave meet and greets, autographs, and talk shows and focus on what you love to do, what you hate to do. Many times over we've heard you say crabbing is a love/hate relationship, and that it takes a while to get into that mindset. If that means shutting yourself away, we understand.
For the Deckhands: The days will be grueling, and the sleep lacking. Know that we send our thoughts your way, that we support and admire your hard work. We look forward to watching you battle odds and conditions that no normal human could endure, and do so with your chin held high and your game faces on.
For the Greenhorns: My first instinct is to laugh at you, because some of you have no idea what you are getting yourselves into. We as viewers always think "I could do that!" when in reality, we know better. You are about to show the world whether or not you can, and I wish I could bottle up strength and courage and send it to you. Listen, learn, and above all, stay safe.
When King crab season opens you will take a deep breath, send the orders to cast off, and plunge headlong into the crazy Bering Sea. We will wait for your return with baited breath.
