With Season 7 ending last night of Deadliest Catch, Aidin and I came to a decision on something we've both been pondering for a while: What Do We Do With The Blog?

Right now, the blog is a place to house Hump Day pictures. This was never my intention for this blog, but alas, that's what it has become. Aidin and I both have a lot on our plates right at the moment, and its hard to sit down to write anything meaningful about Deadliest Catch, except, well, its been a season full of drama (I caught myself thinking last night that the Behind the Scenes of Season 7 was the best episode of the entire season. Sad right?). And drama is something Aidin and I both try to avoid at all costs.

So with heavy hearts, we announce the closure of The Blog. Now, rest assured, we aren't going anywhere. The FB page has become the hub of all of our activity anyway, and we will continue to post Hump Day pictures, links to articles, and different things we come across that we believe might interest you about Deadliest Catch and the fishing world in general.

So this is it. The End. We appreciate your support of the blog and all that it has ever entailed. We love you!

Save a Turkey, Eat Crabs

Its been amazing few months here on the blog and over on our FB page. I thought that with it being Thanksgiving Day, I would make a list of things I am thankful for in the Deadliest Catch world.



(Bear with me, I'm not good at serious posts)

1. First and foremost, I am thankful for our FB friends. Aidin and I say this a lot, but we mean it with every fiber of our beings. We've made some amazing friendships, supported, and been supported by, some great people. I try not to let my personal life get involved with the Ode2DC FB page, but when it does, you are all there to support me and give me words of encouragement, or great ideas when I hit a road bump. There are days Aidin can't get ahold of me, and she needs a "pick me up" and you are all there to give her cyber hugs.

2. I am thankful for the captains, the deckhands/greenhorns, and the production crews for inspiring me everyday. Their hard work and determination provides me with a "Dammit, I can do this" attitude everyday. This year has been tough emotionally for me, and there are days that I struggle with getting out of bed, or being a good parent, but then I think of Deadliest Catch and I know that I can persevere too. I hold my head up, and I get stronger everyday because of their dedication.

3. Last, but most certainly not least is my bestie Aidin. I poke fun at her, drive her batty, and give her a hard time, but my life would be dull without her. For 11 years she has been my everlasting cheerleader. Even when my judgmental attitude took me away from her, she always welcomed me back with open arms and a kick in the ass. We make each other better, and together, we tag team this crazy thing called Life. She truely is my Heterosexual Lifemate. BBKF!

So what are you thankful for?

Obsession

I think a lot. My brain is always spinning. So with that being said, I forced myself to ask a very serious question.

"Am I obsessed with Deadliest Catch and all that it entails?"

Let me give you some history so you understand why I ask this of myself.

When I was 13, I got my first taste of Hanson. Yes, MMMBop and all that jazz. I was immediately hooked and I scoured the newsstands for any magazine that boasted their image. I loved their sound, what they stood for, and all of their hard work. I would tape their pictures on my wall and daydream about them during school.

Two years later, enter Backstreet boys and *Nsync. Naturally, I just thought they were hot. Sure, I liked their music, but I understood they were fabricated. I bought all of their CDs, and their pictures got put right next to Hanson's on my wall. I scoured the internet searching for any kind of information I could find.

When I was 17, I was all into wrestling. Loved the hot guys, the story lines, etc. Again, tape+pictures=mural of wrestling along with my other pictures.I frequented wrestling news sites for any back ground info.

But when I got married and moved in with my (soon to be ex) husband, that stuff got put away or thrown away, depending on its importance to me.

So my point is this: my entire focus was centered around those bands, groups, and wrestlers. Therefore, I would consider myself "obsessed".

Now along comes Deadliest Catch, and I find myself printing out the "Bering Sea Poem" to hang on my wall, creating a blog, and hanging out on a FB page dedicated to DC all day long. I don't want to talk about anything else. I even wanted to be a greenhorn for Halloween this year (if I would have had enough cash, I would have done it too).

But part of me resists this label. I'm wondering if its because I'm grown up now. Or maybe its the Bering Sea Bad Boys themselves. Their job demands respect. Never before have I seen anything like how brave (or crazy, depending on your POV) and fearless these men are.

They don't care about their appearance, I mean, most of them dress in jeans and t-shirts all the time. Just because there is a camera in their faces, they don't mince words or play up the camera. They do their job to the best of their ability and then go home and struggle with their lives. Its an Everyday Joe type of thing. We all struggle with our jobs, with our family lives, and with vices maybe we shouldn't have. To see men bravely fight that in front of millions of people stirs something up inside of me.

So back to the question, "Am I obsessed with Deadliest Catch?"

Yes, probably.

Is it healthier than boy bands of the 90's? God I hope so.

Bering Seas Crazed

This is a conversation between Shannon and I....this shows you how far her mind is into Deadliest Catch.

Back story: I've been dealing with a UTI for weeks and I have to have IV therapy and and not allowed to get my needle wet.

Aidin: dude..I figured a way of showering without a bag...I used a kitchen glove with a rubber band on the end

It's a Crabby Party!

So on August 14th Shannon and I had a big birthday bash for all the August Birthdays. There are quite a bit of us. While Shannon and I were talking about when to have the party she said we needed a theme...thus the Deadliest Catch birthday theme was born. I wish I was joking. I'll slowly show you pictures of how we set up plus some of our friends relaxing.

We have Shannon here hiding behind one our "go this way" signs. We had to point the way since we had the party in the middle of nowhere and knew some people would get lost.

Ok so Shannon had this idea about turning the house into one big bar. In most bars there are pictures of "famous" people that have been there. We had some people fooled. They really did think we took these pics and that we knew the crews themselves. I assure you, we only borrowed these from off the Internet.

We did the same with just basic photos of things. Even a picture of Dutch Harbor, I believe, in the spring.(not enough snow for crab fishing)

Ah our bar with the alcohol....it had A LOT of use that night. And it spun around for maximum alcohol use.

We're Off to See the Wizard

*Gasp* Two posts in one day after two months of silence? Crazy! Aidin and I apologize for our absence. It really couldn't be helped.

So Captain Keith of the Wizard has been blowing up Twitter lately showing us pictures of the Wizard getting a facelift and inspection. Its really cool to see this process.

High in the sky

Welding repairs on the bottom of the ship. Captain Keith says that its mandatory for a ship to have a hull inspection every two years. Hmm, something else I didn't know.

So, I have been wondering this for a while now: Why exactly is there paint on the bottom of the ship? A: You never see it, its always under the water, and B: Doesn't the waves chip the paint off? Why waste money?

I thought this was the best picture. After years of seeing the tanks get stuffed full of crab, and hearing how much the tanks can hold, we finally get to see how deep they really are. Sure, the Deadliest Catch film crews show you the tanks from the deck, but its hard to get a good perspective of how deep those things really are. This amazes me, really.

So once again, sorry for our absence. Aidin and I will try in the upcoming months to really get involved in this blog again, now that things are picking back up as the captains get ready for the upcoming season in October.

And, to boot, our birthday party is this weekend (Aidin's birthday was the 5th of August, mine is the 13th)(yeah, I know, it's FRIDAY the 13th. "Don't leave port on a Friday") and its a Deadliest Catch theme. It's gonna be a blast and I'm excited to get some pictures on here to show you.

Birthday party ideas

So as you know Shannon and I are having a big August Birthday Bash this coming Saturday and it's themed...what for it!! Deadliest Catch! We have crabs, crab pots, nets, and a lil something from each ship. The only thing that isnt Deadliest Catch themed is the birthday cake.

This is one of the posters that will be displayed at the house. I believe I will have it over the bar area because of the Elbow Room logo. I'm looking forward to a great party. Details later.

Tonight is the Night

So it all goes down tonight: Captain Phil of the Cornelia Marie suffers a stroke during an offload.



Even knowing that this episode was coming, and honestly I do appreciate the fact that Discovery Channel clued us in, my heart is breaking.



To see Phil in so much pain has been extremely difficult these last few weeks. He reminds me so much of my uncles, even my own father, that I immediately related to his story. To see such a strong man with pain in his eyes is humbling, to know he would do anything to make sure all of his quotas were met, his deckhands were paid and safe, and his boys grew into men, you knew the Phil was the kind of man, father, uncle, that we all needed in our lives, no matter how crass or brazen he was, he was upfront and honest.



And that is it in a nutshell. Captain Phil Harris was an honest, hardworking man in a time where people do whatever the can do to get things for free, who are lazy, and think that they are owed everything. He loved his boys, tried to teach them right from wrong, and led by example. He practiced what he preached.

So with a heavy heart, and wet eyes, I will watch Deadliest Catch tonight. It was the first thing I thought of when I woke up this morning. And in reality, for me, the thought that keeps running through my head is "I do not want to see Jake and Josh crumble." "I do not want to see Phil weak."

It's been great watching the captains and the deckhands from the other boats rally around and behind the boys. Discovery Channel has respected the boys, and Phil himself, by putting time and effort into editing the next few episode of Deadliest Catch with finesse and tact. The loss of a parent is never easy, and unfortunately, Jake and Josh are "famous" now, therefore the mourning process for them will be long and drawn out because of publicity and memorials and questions.

A long goodbye is never easy, but Phil was brave to the end. A true fisherman.

Sorry for my absence. I just moved this past weekend and the last week of my life has gotten extremely hectic.

So for news...

Deadliest Catch Promo

Yes I'm well aware that Season 6 is half way done but I cannot help myself with anything that has Capt. Phil taking about Jake and Josh in a loving manner. So to show that; I will show you the video. Thank you to whomever posted it on youtube.

By the way; as Shannon has stated I will be posting a lot of videos on this blog. They will range from really meaningful things to just something to make people laugh. Also because of who I am I'm not sure I could put any tribute videos of Captain Phil without permission from Jake or Josh themselves. I feel like that would be the respectful thing to do and I do not want to step on any toes.

My Intentions

As this is the first post, I thought I would state my intentions, as they were, and to introduce myself a little, so you can see where I am coming from.

This blog will constantly be changing and evolving. I don't like to stick to one subject, so Ode to Deadliest Catch will be a menagerie of different things, thoughts on the captains and crews, reviews of the shows, and hopefully (crossing my fingers), I will be able to keep you updated on the different appearances and/or signings involving the Deadliest Catch captains.

I hate dwelling on bad things, so this is going to be my first, last, and only thought on the death of Captain Phil Harris: it's too soon. He will be mourned and missed, and I must admit to being hesitant to watch season 7 when it starts. It won't be the same. Captain Phil was, is, my favorite captain on Deadliest Catch, and I admired his devil-may-care attitude and the way he was up front and honest with everyone, even, no, especially, his sons.

My past regarding Deadliest Catch has been sketchy to say the least, up until February. I had caught different episodes and I adored the show, but at the time, I didn't have cable or satellite TV, so I could only watch DC when I stole my mother's TV remote at her house. Not exactly the best viewing opportunities to be sure. But as I said, in February, I gained access to satellite TV and fell in love all over again with Deadliest Catch, and I immediately bought seasons 1-5, locked myself in my house, and had a marathon.

I got my friend Aidin stuck on the show, much to her amazement. She thought I was crazy for being entranced by crab pots and fish-smelling men, but as soon as she sat with me to watch season 4, she was just as riveted as I was.

So now Aidin will be my helper on this blog, doing a lot of video researching and maybe a blog of her own every now and then, but we mostly will be collaborating together on each post.

The timing with this blog will not be planned. Whenever I have a thought, I tend to write it down, pour over it, research it, try to find appropriate pictures or videos, and then post it. It takes time. But I do have a few Spots planned for this blog: Hottie of the Week (yes, Aidin and I have fave DC men, but we won't exclude anyone, for any reason), Best Quotes, Upcoming Appearances, and whatever else my sick and twisted mind can come up with.
