Back Up, It's Always a Good Idea

I was rewatching Season 5 of Deadliest Catch last night, and the episode where Lenny comes back to The Wizard to help Captian Keith after "The Wave" came on. This is one of the best episode's in my opinion, because, including Lenny, you really get to see how the captains depend on the senior deckhands.

My point is this: There is always at least one guy on every single boat that the captain never has to yell at, can always depend on, and is usually the first one on deck, and the last one to leave.

Behold....The Unsung Heros....

So let's start with The Wizard and Mr. Lenny Lekanoff. This guy is amazing. I know he retired from fishing, crabbing, etc, but when his captain needed him, he didn't ask questions, didn't complain that his retirement was cut short, and even laughed when a wave knocked him off his feet during the first trip. He's quiet and steady, always honest, and really throws himself into his job.

Now the Time Bandit. This one is a little harder because the Time Bandit has always been the "Party Boat" and in the last season, they lost Russell Newberry. He was usually the one that Captains Andy and Johnathan would rely on, talk to, and allow to run a little wild. Then when he left, under strained circumstances, Mike Fourtner stepped up and became that guy. Now he is on the outs with the captains after being bumped back down the the deck when his"Captain in Training" rights got taken away. They would be the obvious choices. But this brings me to Eddie Uwekoolani. He's funny, but dedicated. He's a hard worker, he never complains, and he does a great job ragging on the greenhorns.

On the Northwestern, there are two such men: Nick Mavar and Norm Hansen. For Norm, there is one shining moment that shows exactly how calm, cool, and collected he is in the face of chaos: Matt and Jake's fist fight on deck. This video cracks me up, because Norm is silently watching the fight, completely uninterested in the drama, calmly closing the coiler, and keeping the two brawlers out of the bite of the line, never once shouting at them to stop or inserting himself into the fray. While Nick on the other hand is standing between the two men trying to get them to calm down. Without Nick and Norm, this fight could have gotten ugly really fast.

And last but certainly not least is the Cornelia Marie. When I think of great men on the Cornelia, I immeidately think of Freddie Maughtai and Steve Ward. Freddie is the rock of that crew, always ready with a smile and a positive attitude. And Steve, well Steve is just a plain old hard worker. I always admired how Steve would go down to the engine room, and look and look and look to make sure everything was working properly, and if he found something that he didn't like, he fixed it, without needing to be told by Phil or before a crisis came up.

The fact is, without these deckhands, who work for hours upon hours without rest, who watch the backs of their brothers at sea, the fishing industry would be a chaotic mess. The captains need someone they trust and can rely on, on deck to guide the younger deckhands and greenhorns, to provide morale. Someone who will be honest with them, not bullshit them to cover mistakes, and who will accept responsibility. These senior deckhands might not get a lot of TV time, but as a fan, I appreciate their hard work and their dedication to their work.

Word Play

This is just me being bored and needing something to do. I might end up doing this on every boat.

Josh: Hey Jake I think I saw Jessica Alba over there.
Jake: Nah that's just you wishing.
Josh: No I swear it's her.
Jake: Dude I'm trying to get my picture taken over here.
Josh: But...
*Jake looks* No That's just Shannon and Aidin trying to hide from us.
*Josh double takes* Dammit. You're right.
Jake: Dude you so need to get over Jessica Alba
Josh: I think I'll settle on that Puerto Rican instead.
*Jake rolls his eyes* Ok. I'll go talk to Shannon when we finish here.

Mug shots? Joking I hope.

I was bored and thought about looking through many different search engines for pictures I may not have yet or haven't seen. I came across these pictures and I can tell it's a joke thing because in real arrests they make you take your hat off. Now remember 2 things. I'm 5'5" and Shannon is 5'3".

Josh here is 6' even....thats 7inches more then me....I come to his nose. Which is ok because it means when I wear heals he's still taller then me. With Shannon he's got 9 inches over her.
Jake is 5'7" which means he's got about 4 inches on Shannon and only 2inches on me. I actually laugh when I see the height difference in Jake and Josh when they fight because Jake is so much shorter then him but then again he could also be a bada** fighter so it may not make a difference at all.

I love sharing pictures with you. I also like to throw in things other then articles we seem to write about things.
I also wanna point out this is a mix blog. We will state things that we believe is needy of being exposed as well as joke around and just mess with the blog.

Emmys anyone?

Not going to say too much other then DAMN! Jake and Josh Harris look great in tuxedos. This was for the Emmys on Saturday Aug 21st. Shannon found this picture, I had to share it.

Three Men and Pincher's Crabs

So, I heard from a little birdie, aka Northwestern's newsletter, that Edgar, Matt, and Jake would be in Ft. Myers on the 21st. So I texted Aidin and cyber shrieked in her ear that we had to go. I didn't hear any complaints, so the day arrived and off we went.

There were two charities there, one of them being Jake's search for his dad. We donated what we could, and I hope it helped. The other charity was Blessings in a Backpack.

The occasion was at Pincher's Crab Shack in Ft. Myers, FL. Harley Davidson was a huge sponsor
It was a rainy day...
...but no one let that stop them.
We got there pretty early, and they were still setting up, but a couple of hours later, we were one of the first people in line and the line was slowly getting longer.

Luckily, there was an alcohol tent right next to me, and they were making Duck Farts! Here's to you Captain Phil!

Looky who we found!
Not a lot of people recognized Edgar's wife, but we did! Probably because the re-proposal episode of Season 5's After the Catch makes me cry everytime!

She was very sweet and gracious, but we left her alone. She looked a little uncomfortable when she realized we knew her.

Our new shirts
Captain Sig's beer

Since I was wearing my Cornelia Marie shirt, I stuck my shirt on my son, but it didn't stay there very long.

Just an excuse to take a picture

After three hours of waiting, Edgar, Matt, and Jake finally arrived! Looking good!

So when they arrived they said thanks to the crowd, then headed inside to grab something to eat, it was a crab shack after all, and change shirts. After about an hour they came outside to begin the meet and greet.

This picture is priceless! Aidin's son immediately turned shy so Edgar had to play it up

Yeah, Logan wasn't thrilled either but I definitely was!

The Autographs

So the day was amazing. We didn't get to stay for the Q&A session as the boys were wet and tired, therefore grumpy, but we had a great time. And rumor has it they will be back in the area around December, so guess where we will be....

...you know it!

It's a Crabby Party!

So on August 14th Shannon and I had a big birthday bash for all the August Birthdays. There are quite a bit of us. While Shannon and I were talking about when to have the party she said we needed a theme...thus the Deadliest Catch birthday theme was born. I wish I was joking. I'll slowly show you pictures of how we set up plus some of our friends relaxing.

We have Shannon here hiding behind one our "go this way" signs. We had to point the way since we had the party in the middle of nowhere and knew some people would get lost.

This is our net hanging from the ceiling. I'm laying on the floor taking this picture....those are plastic crabs we found at the party store. (Thank you Jeremiah)

Ok so Shannon had this idea about turning the house into one big bar. In most bars there are pictures of "famous" people that have been there. We had some people fooled. They really did think we took these pics and that we knew the crews themselves. I assure you, we only borrowed these from off the Internet.

We did the same with just basic photos of things. Even a picture of Dutch Harbor, I believe, in the spring.(not enough snow for crab fishing)

Thank you Larry from the Incentive for giving us this beautiful poem. Shannon has this in her room.

Avast the calm Bering Sea. Or at least that's what we were going for. The Bering Sea at Dutch Harbor with no wind or snow and an outside bar.

This is really the bar at Dutch Harbor...we name our bar the same for the night.

Hey look our net again. it looks pretty good hanging the way it is.

Myself and Shannon sporting our Cornelia Marie shirts.

Ok now I know the cake is a little girly and has a martini glass but I ordered this before we started doing the themes...I did have them add the Northwestern's Shut up and Fish.

Ah our bar with the alcohol....it had A LOT of use that night. And it spun around for maximum alcohol use.

Meet Jeremy....we found out that night he is a Deadliest Catch fan. That was great.

This here is (from left to right) Emma, Myself, Shannon and Simy is laying on all of us.

Miss Simy, Emma and my man Dean talking about can't remember what.

Justin and I enjoying ourselves the beach of our Bering Sea.

Hey look it is a bar! Smoking and liquor.

We're Off to See the Wizard

*Gasp* Two posts in one day after two months of silence? Crazy! Aidin and I apologize for our absence. It really couldn't be helped.
So Captain Keith of the Wizard has been blowing up Twitter lately showing us pictures of the Wizard getting a facelift and inspection. Its really cool to see this process.
The Wizard getting ready to pull into dry dock.
High in the sky
Welding repairs on the bottom of the ship. Captain Keith says that its mandatory for a ship to have a hull inspection every two years. Hmm, something else I didn't know.
So, I have been wondering this for a while now: Why exactly is there paint on the bottom of the ship? A: You never see it, its always under the water, and B: Doesn't the waves chip the paint off? Why waste money?

I thought this was the best picture. After years of seeing the tanks get stuffed full of crab, and hearing how much the tanks can hold, we finally get to see how deep they really are. Sure, the Deadliest Catch film crews show you the tanks from the deck, but its hard to get a good perspective of how deep those things really are. This amazes me, really.
So once again, sorry for our absence. Aidin and I will try in the upcoming months to really get involved in this blog again, now that things are picking back up as the captains get ready for the upcoming season in October.
And, to boot, our birthday party is this weekend (Aidin's birthday was the 5th of August, mine is the 13th)(yeah, I know, it's FRIDAY the 13th. "Don't leave port on a Friday") and its a Deadliest Catch theme. It's gonna be a blast and I'm excited to get some pictures on here to show you.
Shut Up And Fish!
